Thanks!

I completely agree with you. I understand Feminism in its self-determined form, not its socially constructed one and therefore include anyone who self-identifies as a woman. There is no one answer to the question of feminism and I think this is where the movement suffers the most at the hands of its detractors. The link seems to be broken, but thanks for adding to the conversation!

Maybe I'm of the Old Guard, more second wave than I realize. Or, maybe I'm of the fourth wave. I don't know. I do know that it is dangerous to be a radical feminist. I was shocked to hear, from a woman who defines herself as a feminist, that "the personal isn't always political." For me, it is a foundation of feminism!

But, as I found out, it is dangerous within the "left" as well as the "right" and even somewhat within the feminist movement itself to identify with the radicalism espoused by Adrienne Rich and Andrea Dworkin. I found this article to be quite illuminating on the silencing of radicals.

This post is wonderful. You have captured the the great quandary that is - defining Feminism. I have been having this conversation for a while now and among my patient friends, it has become:

"Whose Feminism are you talking about?"

A lot of us want there to be a solid answer. The one, true 'Feminism'. I just don't think it exists. I don't think it ever did. Why else would we be on a '4th wave'?

I do know that I'm not a fan of exclusion. So, I tend to come down on the side of letting people define Feminism for themselves, insofar as it pertains to their lives, wants and desires. I myself include trans(gender/sexual/vestite) persons in my concept of Feminism.

I recently took a stab at articulating my views of Feminism over at Amanda ReCupido's blog: (http://www.undomesticgoddess.com/2009/09/undomestic-10-arvan-reese.html). You may agree or not with any of it, I'm just offering it as something to add to the conversation.

Keep it up.
